Vibrators and sex toys

Vibrators and sex toys

Most sex toys can be used safely by anyone, but it is possible to be allergic to your sex toy. If you suffer from a known allergy, such as latex allergy, then you may need to choose what you use a bit more carefully.

Finding latex-free sex toys

If you have a known allergy to latex, then you’ll need to be really careful when using condoms, vibrators, dildos and other sex toys. Latex is widely used in condoms and is often included as an ingredient in vibrators, dildos and sex toys, too.

Latex allergy can be very unpleasant so you will need to avoid products that contain the allergen. It’s not always easy to obtain information about what ingredients are included in the manufacturing process of sex toys, but it’s always worth enquiring with manufacturers in case they’re able to provide details. One useful tip is to look out for manufactures specialising in silicone sex toys – as they are usually exclusively made of silicone and won’t contain any latex.

Check the ingredients of lubricants

If you know that you’re allergic to certain ingredients, then always check the ingredients of lubricants or other sex enhancing creams. Sometimes products do have ingredients that can cause irritation in sensitive people and it’s better to find out in advance than have an unpleasant reaction.

Reducing the risk of allergic reactions to sex toys

It’s not only those with latex allergies that can experience reactions when using sex toys. Often other people do too, due to the type of rubber used, scent that’s added into the rubber or simply from a chemical reaction caused by the product. If you have any problems with a penetrative sex toy, but don’t want to give up the pleasure of using it, then you could put a condom on it before using it, to reduce the risk of allergic reactions.

Report any allergic reactions

It’s not the best thing in the world to admit, and you can be forgiven for being embarrassed, but if you do experience an allergic reaction to a sex toy, then it may be worth reporting it to the manufacturers.

Sex toys are often not tested in the same way as non-sex toy products and the manufactures may be grateful to know of any reactions to the rubber or materials used.

At least you’ll be reporting your symptoms willingly, not like the woman in this clip….
